Permissions and Approvals

You won’t require planning approval for a garden fencing installation if the height of the panel is less than 1m. All panels over 1m in size positioned alongside a highway, and every fence over 2m in height, will need planning permission. Fences over 2m in height will also require you to have the approval of neighbours. The ownership of any fence separating two homes will be listed in a property’s Title Plans or its Land Registry paperwork.

The owner of the garden fencing is responsible for maintenance and repairs.

While there are no legal requirements to separate any two properties with a fence or a wall, there are instances where safety might require one or the other (often if homes run adjacent to a busy road or railway tracks).

Garden Fencing Types

The team at Soane Gardening Services uses pressure-treated timber panels for installations, meaning that customers in Basingstoke, Fleet, Hook and the surrounding local areas benefit from less maintenance and longer product lifespans. All timber garden fencing supplied comes from FSC certified and sustainable sources. The environment is our workspace, and our livelihoods depend on its future, so we are always vigilant about product selection.

Available styles include:

Close-Board Fencing

The UK’s most common fencing style for adding privacy and security to your garden. Durable in design with a traditional appearance where overlapping vertical pales are attached to horizontal rails with no gaps between them, we can erect close-board garden fencing using your preferred choice of post and, if required, gravel boards to protect timber from wet ground conditions.

Also referred to as featheredge fencing, this style is mainly used for domestic installations but also has a variety of commercial applications.

Lap Panel Fencing

A budget option with rough-sawn horizontal slats, you may already know this garden fencing style as waney or overlap panels. This is an excellent choice for screening outdoor areas and to keep prying eyes from seeing what you do in the confines of your own private space. It is also a cost-effective way to demarcate boundaries, but we would recommend using gravel boards too.

Available in heights of between 3ft and 6ft, lap panel fencing will need to have an annual treatment to protect the condition of the timber.

Post-and-Rail Fencing

This is a widely used fencing style in rural areas and is perfect for agricultural and equestrian applications as well as for smallholdings. Soane Gardening Services constructs post-and-rail fencing using upright round or upright square timber posts with flat or half-round horizontal rails. We can also attach wire mesh to stop predators accessing areas with cattle, sheep and livestock.

Typical heights of between 1.2m and 1.5m give our customers freedom with design. Our landscaping company also supplies any hardware needed.

Palisade Fencing

Available in steel or timber so that it can be used as a commercial or garden fencing choice, this product helps to secure perimeters and protect your assets. With residential applications, aesthetics won’t be an issue and the design of this fencing style is decorative, straightforward and lets plenty of sunlight through. To add interest, use concave pales instead of straight runs.

Steel palisade fencing is more robust and acts as a deterrent against would-be intruders who might see your business premises as an opportunity.

Soane Gardening Services is a one-stop shop for garden fencing installation, repair and replacement. We always show the appropriate care so that lawns, driveways, patios and garden paving are never damaged as a result of our work. Should you choose a style of fencing that requires an annual treatment, we can also offer fencing maintenance and upkeeping services.
